Beachin’ on a Budget: How to Vacation in the Southern Sun Without Breaking the Bank

The sun is shining, the waves are crashing, and the beach is calling your name. A weekend getaway doesn't have to break the bank! You can get lost on the shoreline and dig your toes in the sand with these simple hacks to save a penny and still get the beach vacation you have been dreaming of!

1) Pack a lunch, and maybe a dinner

Food is easily one of the biggest expense of any vacation, so beat the system by throwing some groceries in the car when you pack. From eating out to snacks in between the waves, bringing a cooler of your own food is the easiest way to save some cash while soaking in the sun. Lunches on the beach instead of waiting in line at a chain will not only save you money but will give you more time to dip your toes in the sand.

2) Vacation away from the ocean

You would be surprised how much money you can save by deciding to stay off the shore rather than on the beach. Just a few blocks back from the waterfront, rentals are usually a fraction of the cost. Most beach towns have bicycle rental services for cheap, so staying away from the beach and cheap bike rental can even be a fun activity for the whole family, all while saving some cash.

3) Check local websites for free activities

While most beach towns are tourist towns, they are also bustling with residents, and like any town, there are always community events going on. From movies by the greenway, to art Saturday’s for the kids, check your beach town’s chamber of commerce website or tourism website for free activities for the whole family. You are likely to find activities from community BBQs, to music festival or free weekend concerts, if you know the right place to look!

4) Pack your own beach gear

How many times have you been to the beach and ran to the store for an umbrella, or a snorkel, or a new beach towel. It adds up! When you’re packing the car to head to the coast, make sure you remember the beach chairs, umbrellas, beach towels, toys, sunscreen and all the other must-haves to get lost in the southern sun. Balance your budget and save a buck by planning ahead.

5) Consider different dates to head to the sandy shores

Weekends are some of the worst times to vacation, and holiday weekends take the cake for destroying the bank. The prices of everything from hotel rooms, restaurants and souvenirs are jacked up, so play around with dates. Add a Thursday or a Monday to your mini-vacation getaway, instead of staying all weekend when prices are more expensive.
